03.16Nykesha Sales Says She Is Not Retiring

Nakesha Sales has taken the 2008 season off to recover from nagging injuries. Sales isn’t retiring from basketball and she hasn’t been traded.
“This has not been an easy decision,” Sales said Tuesday. “I’ve been going back and forth with it because I’ve always been able to bounce back. But after playing a light schedule overseas this offseason, I realized that now is the time for me to get healthy.
“I am not calling this a retirement because I have every intention to get healthy and resume my basketball career.”
With Sales not playing this season she won’t count under the league’s salary cap and the Sun are free to pursue other players.
The Sun will only have 2 returning starters, Lindsay Whalen and Asjha Jones, for the ‘08 season. Margo Dydek is out with her pregnancy, they traded Katie Douglas to the Fever and now Sales out to get healthy.
Sun coach Mike Thibault says, “I’m happy for her. She has come to terms with what she needs to do. For us, I had to go on making plans as if she was not going to be here. I couldn’t count on her being here. The things we’ve been doing, the people we are looking at in the draft, were based on the possibility that she was not going to play.”
Sales plans to stay in Florida where she lives but will probably visit the Sun this summer to help with the yournger players.
