Connecticut Sun Beat Houston Comets, 78-68

Asjha Jones led the Sun with 15 points and 8 rebounds in a 78-68 win over the Houston Comets Tuesday night. The Sun continue to hold the top spot in the Eastern Conference, 13-5.

Lindsay Whalen set a Connecticut career record of 9 assists. She now has 744 assists, surpassing Shannon Johnson from the Houston Comets. Whalen also contributed 14 points to the win.

Down by 14 with just over 3 minutes left to go in the first half, the Sun made an 8-2 run to cut the Houston lead to 8.

The Sun took over the Comets in the 3rd with an 11-1 run and overcame technical fouls to Whalen, Jones and Tamika Whitmore.

“They fired us up,” Jones said. “After that happened, we started to play better individually and as a team.”

In the 4th, the Sun made a 13-5 run which gave them a 59-51 lead with 8 minutes left in regulation.

Jamie Carey hit a pair of 3’s to give Connecticut a 72-67 lead with just over a minute left to play.

Houston’s Matee Ajavon made a free throw, 72-68, but the Comets didn’t get any closer in the closing seconds. Connecticut went on to score 6 more points to seal the win, 78-68.

Rookie Sandrine Gruda scored a career-high 14 points and played much of the game with Jones and Whitmore, all of whom are 6-foot-2 or taller.

“We went with a big lineup to match their length and size,” said coach Mike Thibault. “We tried to stay big with them the rest of the game.”
