07.08Connecticut Defeated by Detroit Shock, 88-82
Detroit Shock took the lead for the Eastern Conference by half a game with a win over the Sun on Tuesday, 88-82. If it comes down to a tie, the Shock have the number 1 spot.
Asjha Jones led the Sun with 21 points with 16 of the 20 in the first half. Jones was held to only 5 points in the second half.
Lindsay Whalen added 21 points, 8 assists and 7 rebounds.
But there was no relief from the bench for the Sun starters. The Shock bench outscored the Connecticut bench 35-16.
“We made it too easy for them,” said coach Mike Thibault. “Little things got us beat – the little things that we are going to have to get better at if we are going to beat them in a championship.”
By half time, Connecticut was up 45-42 but in the 2nd half the Shock rallied and took a 63-61 lead going into the 4th. The lead went back and forth for most of the final period. Then Cheryl Ford took hold of the game, scoring 9 points in 7 minutes, leading the Shock to an 80-75 lead. Finally, Deanna Nolan hit a 3 to seal the game with an 8 point lead with less than 2 minutes to play. Detroit held on for the win.
“They got shots around the basket and they made plays that we didn’t,” Jones said. “We let Pierson get to her favorite moves, and at this level, players are too good to let them do that.”
